Frequently Asked Questions About Chiropractic Care
- Does insurance cover chiropractic treatments?
- What about “in-network” vs. “out-of-network” coverage for chiropractic care?
- Do I have any coverage “out-of-network” for chiropractic treatments?
Most insurance companies have some coverage for chiropractic treatment. Unfortunately, the coverage is often minimal and seldom makes sense. For instance, many insurance policies will cover 15 treatments per calendar year. In some cases, this may be enough to relieve a patient’s symptoms, but what if it doesn’t? For insurance to work hand in hand with chiropractic, it would have to provide coverage based on the diagnosis. Some conditions may only need 15 treatments and some more chronic cases may need two or three times the amount of care. In other words, your insurance coverage for chiropractic treatments may not be in your best interest to restoring your health. That DOES NOT mean you cannot receive treatment. Chiropractic treatments are very affordable, and most doctors are willing to arrange treatment plans that will give your body a chance to return to good health.
Most insurance companies will do what they can to encourage you to stay in-network. Have you ever asked yourself why? Are in-network doctors better? The answer is NO! In order for a doctor to be in-network, they just need to sign a contract that agrees to limit your treatments to stay within the insurance company’s parameters, which is minimal. If a doctor goes outside the parameters on behalf of their patient’s health, they may be put on probationary status. Once there are multiple offenses, they are removed from the network. In other words, it is about saving the insurance companies money, not restoring you to your proper health.
In most cases, YES! Most policies have out-of-network coverage. In some cases, the coverage is just as good as in-network coverage. This may be hard for you to determine, so we recommend allowing your chiropractic clinic to act on your behalf. They are trained to deal with insurance companies and know the proper questions to ask in order to find out what your coverage possibilities are.
